Charlton Memorial Hospital – Folkston, Georgia

Home  /  All  /  Current Page

On AugCharlton2ust 30, Charlton Memorial Hospital became the third rural hospital to close in Georgia in the year 2013, following Calhoun Memorial Hospital’s February closing in Arlington and nearby Richland’s Stewart-Webster Hospital in March. The cluster of closings in the area highlights the growing plight of America’s rural territories in their attempt to provide quality care to largely impoverished and uninsured residents.

Home to a county of just 13,000, Charlston Memorial served the people of Southeast Georgia and North Florida for nearly 40 years, providing a 25-bed facility to the residents of Folkston and the surrounding area while employing over 100 full time employees. But with a debt of $6 million, hospital CEO H.D. Carrington stated that the time had come to shut its doors.

The area’s closest hospital is now Southeast Georgia Health System Charlton1’s Camden Campus in St. Mary’s, a distance of thirty miles.
