St. Anthony’s Hospital – Houston, Texas

St-AnthonysAfter filing for bankruptcy, St. Anthony’s Hospital of Houston, Texas was forced to close on August 20, 2014.

The nearly sixty year old facility had been plagued with financial issues for years, but had sought to turn things around after being bought by WestMed LLC in September 2009. Changing its name from Renaissance Hospital Houston to St. Anthony’s Hospital and undergoing a major renovation in which new departments were added to the 39-bed structure were at the center of the drive to give the hospital a new beginning to address the needs of its community.

But months of payroll issues proved to be the undoing of Saint Anthony’s, and CEO Jason Leday focused the blame on a new Medicare payment contractor, Novitas Solutions, for the recurring problems. Nearly 150 employees, ranging from doctors to nurses and administrators, were paid sporadically, at best, due to what he claimed was the Medicare facilitator’s taking far too long to pay claims owed to the hospital..

Prior to the closing, Leday said, “This is a national issue that affects us locally. We are adapting to the new ways of doing business that have been created.”
